It was the 10th anniversary of iPhone and the world wanted to see the special edition iPhone when Tim Cook took the stage at the yesterday’s event in the Steve Jobs Theater and unveiled the iPhone X. Tim Cook said “it’s the biggest leap forward from the original iPhone”, and indeed it is.

It’s the iPhone X is pronounced as the iPhone ’10’ the ‘X’ is the roman ten. Talking about the new iPhone, the 5.8-inch screen takes up the front panel and it looks a lot like the Essential phone with the camera, sensor & an earpiece cut outs at the top. The device is made up of surgical grade stainless steel and has a glass panel at the back. The device is water and dust resistant. Let’s dive into the details.

Display

For the first time ever, there is an OLED display in the iPhone which is called the Super Retina Display and it measures 5.8-inches, with a resolution of 2436X1125 pixels. Apple has added Dolby Vision and HDR10 support for stunning video playback. It also features TrueTone dynamic white balance adjustment.

The device has an intuitive design with no buttons on the front(No Toch-ID). There is a raise-to-wake feature or you can just tap the screen to get started. A swipe up will take you to the home screen and these gestures work across the Operating System, even for multitasking and to leave apps. Siri can be activated by voice or using the side button.

Face ID

With Touch ID gone, Apple has introduced facial recognition and calls it Face ID. It works with the TrueDepth camera system which lies at the top of the display. Just Glance at the phone, and it identifies your face with an infrared camera which also works in the dark. There is a combination of A11 Bionic chip, a neural engine processes the image in real-time, and it mathematically maps the shape and contours of your face.

Apple claims that the facial recognition is good enough to recognize your hairstyle change or if you’re wearing a hat, or if you decide to grow a beard. It is as secure as the other biometric systems, says Apple.

Apple was one of the first manufacturers to introduce fingerprint sensors as Touch ID and revolutionize the smartphone security and it is trying to do it again with Face ID.

Camera

The iPhone X’s camera has a dual 12MP lens at the rear, with dual optical image stabilization which includes a wide-angle f/1.8 aperture lens and a telephoto f/2.4 aperture lens. It includes a ton of enhancements to improve color reproduction and reduce noise. The rear camera combines optical and digital zoom to provide a total of 10X zoom for photos and 6X zoom for videos.

New Portrait Mode for Selfies

The 7MP front camera now supports Portrait mode and has auto image stabilization and exposure control. Apple’s new image signal processor with TrueDepth camera provides advanced pixel processing and a new color filter and studio quality lighting effects.

Both cameras use the new Natural Lighting effect introduced on the iPhone 8, and the new Augmented Reality(AR) features. Video has also been improved with 4K resolution movies at 60fps now possible, plus slow motion video at 240fps.

Animoji

The iPhone X’s new True Depth camera system also enables a fun new feature called Animoji. There are a dozen different animated emoji to start, and once you send them they mirror your own expressions and movements.

A11 Bionic Chipset

It retains the A11 Bionic chip from the iPhone 8, a 64-bit super efficient processor with a new Apple-designed graphics unit, which has 30 percent more speed than the existing A10 Fusion chip. It has 6 cores plus the performance cores to provide a 25 percent speed increase, and a 70 percent boost from the four performance cores.

Battery

Apple has managed to increase the battery life 2 hours than the iPhone 7 Plus. Finally! Apple has introduced Qi Wireless Charging for iPhone X and will also launch a wireless charging mat called AirPower to charge the phone.

Price and Availability

iPhone 8 models will be available in India from September 29 while you will have to wait till November 3rd for the iPhone X. The 256GB variant of iPhone X will cost Rs 1,02,000 and the 64Gb variant will cost Rs 89,000. As far as the availability is concerned the Pre-Orders will start from 29th October and the device will start shipping from November 3.
