OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed the launch of the much-rumored affordable OnePlus smartphone OnePlus Z. The company confirmed its plans to launch affordable smartphones soon. “We’re shifting strategies after six years of the smartphone business,” OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said in an interview with FastCompany. The brand is not only looking to make cheaper OnePlus phones, but it is also planning to expand its product portfolio in India. The last affordable smartphone from the brand was the OnePlus X in 2015. It seems the company is ready to get back into the game with affordable OnePlus smartphone OnePlus Z. “The ultimate goal is to sell a lot of phones with lower price tags, then spin them into an ecosystem of connected devices,” Lau added.
If the rumors are to be believed, the OnePlus Z is likely to launch in India first and then make its debut to other markets such as North America and Europe. Although there is no confirmation from the company about the name of the phone or its launch timeline. OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau clarifies that the vision of his company will not change as it will continue to make quality products. OnePlus will be announcing its new strategy soon.
OnePlus is aiming to expand its product portfolio and build an ecosystem of connected devices. “We indeed have come from background and roots as a hardware company, but from what we see looking forward, building an ecosystem is a forward trend,” as per a post by Lau on Weibo. Pete didn’t mention which products they will be launching, but we expect new smartphones, smart TVs, and TWS earphones to launch soon.
OnePlus Z specifications
OnePlus Z rumored specifications include a 6.4-inch FHD+ AMOLED punch-hole display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The phone is tipped to be powered by Snapdragon 765G chipset which is an affordable 5G chipset by Qualcomm. It is paired with up to 8GB RAM, and 256GB internal storage.
In terms of optics, the OnePlus Z could sport triple rear camera setup that may consist of a 48MP main sensor, a 16MP secondary sensor, and a 12MP sensor. Rumors also suggest the phone will house a 4,000mAh battery and support 30W fast charging.
A new OnePlus device has also appeared on Geekbench with the model number OnePlus AC2003. We don’t see OnePlus 8T launching anytime soon, thus we expect it to be the rumored OnePlus Z.
The Qualcomm chipset is code named as Lito which is expected to be a modified variant of Snapdragon 765G SoC. As per the screenshot, the device appears to feature 12GB RAM and Android 10. As far as the Geekbench scores are concerned, it scored 612 points on single-core with 1955 points in Multi-core. All the parameters mentioned in the screenshot hints at an affordable OnePlus device.
OnePlus has earned its reputation from a flagship killer to a flagship device maker in 2020. The company is now looking to go back to basics and don’t want to disappoint the fans. OnePlus is also looking to expand its product portfolio by launching new IoT devices.
