It happened yesterday. Yes, I am talking about the Jio Phone Next that was announced at the 44th Reliance Annual General Meet. Last year, Google invested in Jio Platforms Ltd and announced that they will work with Jio to develop an affordable smartphone for India. It has always been a matter of discussion in the country since then.
Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Industries, unveiled the most affordable 4G smartphone in India with a vision of empowering 300 million 2G users with 4G in India. The Chairman said, “an ultra-affordable 4G smartphone is essential to make India 2G mukt”.
Moving forward, let’s talk about some of the features of the JioPhone Next. The smartphone is developed in close partnership with Google and will run an optimized version of Android that is particularly developed for the Jio Phone Next.
The made-for-India device will address the unique needs of millions of new smartphone users in India. The Jio Phone Next comes with voice-first features that enable users to consume content and navigate through the phone in their language. It will also feature automatic read-aloud of screen text, language translation, a smart camera with augmented reality filters, and much more.

In terms of design, the Jio Phone Next looks like any other touchscreen phone with thick bezels and a selfie camera at the front. It has a plastic build with the volume rocker and power button on the right and a single camera sensor on the back. As per Google, the software on the phone supports multiple Indian languages to facilitate the users in India. Google has seamlessly integrated the Read aloud and translate feature throughout the OS to work with any text on the phone screen. Google has developed App actions to integrate Google Assistant with Jio apps. For example, you will be able to ask Google Assistant to play music on Jio Saavn or check your balance on My Jio.
The camera on the phone will feature a night mode, HDR mode, and some India-specific snap lenses.
The smartphone will come pre-installed with Jio suite of apps such as JioMart, JioCinema, Jio Saavn, and Google suite of apps, including Google Play Store. The company has promised faster software and security updates.
Jio Phone Next: Price and launch date
Mukesh Ambani said that the Jio Phone Next will be available in India on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi which is on the 10th of September. However, the company hasn’t disclosed the price of Jio Phone Next yet nor has it revealed its complete specifications.
Moreover, I think that Jio Phone Next will be available for booking from the 10th of September. The Jio Phone Next could be priced between ₹3,999 to ₹7000 in India.
Jio has also partnered with Google Cloud to power Jio services like JioMart, JioHealth, Jio Saavn, and other business solutions.
